Tip to keep your trees alive!!!!!

Trees need to be watered once a week if we don't get significant rain.  Your lawn sprinkler will not provide enough water for your trees.  Use a hose placed inside the tree's drip line.  An easy formula to use:  apply 10 gallons per inch of trunk diameter.  At normal water pressure, your hose turned down to a medium flow should produce roughly 2 gallons of water a minute.  So, a tree with a 5-inch trunk needs 50 gallons of water, so placing the hose under the tree for 25 minutes on medium should do the trick.  Moving it around the tree a couple times is even better.

Are Spring and Fall the only times to plant??

Lets clear up the whole "spring and fall are the only times you can plant"....This is true for trees and shrubs that are growing in the ground.  A grower can only dig trees and shrubs out of the ground to be sold or transplanted during spring and or fall.  Like all garden centers our trees and shrubs are dug in the spring and put into a plastic container or are balled with burlap.  When this occurs all trees and shrubs can be safely planted throughout the spring, summer, and fall!!!  So don't let the dog days of summer stop you from improving your outdoor living space!!!

H20 your plants!!!!!

Mother nature is making it hard on our plants this year!  I strongly advise everyone to give your plants a drink....Newly planted trees and shrubs require water every 2-3 days in the summer months.  Trees and shrubs that have been established in your yard usually are ok for 3-4 weeks without any water....But this year mother nature is not giving our plants any water and with the current heat wave, i again recommend watering all trees and shrubs in your yard or you run the risk of losing them permanently!!!

Hot days = More H20 for your plant

On days when the temp is over 90 degrees make sure you pay attention to your flowers and Hydrangeas....they will need to be watered everyday and sometimes multiple times a day!!!  Birch trees, Red maples and willows also need to be watered more than usual during the HOT days of summer.

Dead Heading perrenials

TIP: don't deadhead perennials if they only flower once- cut the plant back about 1/3 down from the top after flowering then leave it alone

June is a good time to feed your plants!!!!

Don't forget to fertilize!!! Trees and shrubs are looking for food and now is the best time to feed them!!!

One last cold night! We hope

Any annuals that can be brought inside tonight, should be. The temp will drop below 40 degrees and that is about as cold as annuals will handle. So if the weather people are off by a few, there will be a lot of damage to uncovered flowers! So if you can bring them into your garage or cover what is already planted!

Japanese Maple's hit by freeze!!

Bad news....everyone in Rochester and to the north got hit by mother nature last Saturday.  Temps here at Sherwood Forest dropped to 24 degrees over night.  Homeowners with Japanese maples (like myself) are now dealing with the aftermath of this late spring freeze. Good news the Japanese maples are very resilient and should rebound within the next month. So don't give up hope yet!!!

What is Earth Day?

A day in which people would celebrate the beauty of the planet, as well as raise awareness for ways to preserve its natural resources and protect its species. Today, Earth Day is observed in 192 countries. Whether it's a massive public rally, a private event, or an individual contribution, there are many ways to participate. Efforts can range from organizing environmental fundraisers, to planting a tree, to taking care to use less water and paying extra attention to how many lights are left on. Lets all do what we can to better our planet for the future. Our kids depend on it!

Why weather matters

Earth Day

  • A 1.6 degree warming of the North Sea has allowed predators to move into the bottom waters and eat mussels. Mussel beds, like coral reefs, form a matrix on which hundreds of species depend. Their losses have had consequences for the entire ecosystem.

Cold nights ahead!

Be careful of frost early in the season. Any nights of temperature around 34 degrees and clear skies is a sign that frost is soon to follow. Frost can cause a lot of damage to newly planted plants. Covering on cold nights is advised.

Spring is in the air!

It is that time of the year again....Get your lawn mower out, start edging your beds, and I recommend re mulching at least once a year. Some of the benefits of mulching include; enhancing the appearance of your home, a "face-lift" if u will; moisture retention to keep plants hydrated; weed suppression; erosion control; and mulch also enriches the soil as it breaks down. Some varieties such as Cedar can also be used as an effective insect repellent!
